GORDITA FROM THE SIDE OF THE ROAD
File under: things you can’t get in Montreal. This is from La Canaria on Airport Blvd. We don’t usually write restaurant reviews (heh… if you can call a taco truck a restaurant). We keep it close to home… so this counts. Documentation and so on and so forth.
A gordita in Mexican cuisine is a food which is characterized by a small, thick tortilla made with masa (corn flour). The gordita is in contrast to a taco, which uses a thinner tortilla. “Gordita” means “little fat one” in Spanish. The gordita is typically baked on a comal, a small pan similar to a skillet.
The word gordita is also a Spanish term of endearment used to describe an attractive woman or girl who is curvaceous or heavy set. It may be used similarly to the colloquial phrases “little butterball”, “pleasantly plump”, or “got back” in English.
I love it. “Got back”. Anyway, venture to La Canaria and have a gordita. Sweet! Sweet! Sweet! They handcraft them using a 13,000 year old recipe so be flexible with them as they take a few minutes longer than normal to create these epic masterpieces.
